Materials not displaying for some objects when imported

When I import a dwfx file some of the objects appear grey, whereas the rest are adorned in the materials applies to them when creating the models.

 

This has happened on a few models now, but in this particular instance everything in the model has the same material applied to them, so should all appear the same.  I have checked how the materials are applied and all are applied the same, albeit they are originally on different layers.

 

Any ideas why this might happen?

    Having spent much time investigating, this turns out to be down to a large coordinate system.  When I move all objects close to 0,0,0 the render materials display as expected (but for a couple of scaling issues which I can live with).
